The publication we have prepared for you concerns a relatively narrow issue: the position of foreign workers in the labour market in the Czech Republic and in several other selected countries of the European Union. Our original intention was to address mainly the question of job safety for these persons, as well as work accidents and occupational diseases.

On Tuesday 16th September we will present results of the qualitative research on impacts of the Sanctions Directive and other labour migration related issues in the Czech Republic, which SIMI executed in spring 2014.

Research results: employing foreigners - the consequences of the sanctions directive in practice Research results: employing foreigners - the consequences of the sanctions directive in practice 29/07/14

Sociologist Marie Jelinkova put together an expert report for SIMI which included the results of the qualitative research on the consequences of the so-called sanctions directive and other questions regarding the employment of foreigners in the Czech Republic, including the consequent recommendations. The research itself took on the form of structured interviews with 19 respondents including state officials, employers, experts and individuals from the non-governmental sector.

The research and the reports were carried out in the framework of an international project called Employees Beyond Borders financed by the International Visegrad Fund, carried out by four non-governmental organisations from the V4 countries - Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

A comparative summary of the results from all participating countries will be available in August.

On April 10th, 2014 the non-governmental organisations SIMI, OPU and MKC invited Czech and German experts to the Czech Embassy in Berlin to a roundtable themed “Foreign employees - second class workers?”. Representatives of Czech and German departments / unions, ministries of work, work inspectorates and  the non-profit sector discussed how the types of jobs and employment accessible to foreigners are changing in the two aforementioned countries.

Work discrimination against women is nothing new in the Czech Republic. It ranks, together with age discrimination, among the major obstacles to labour market placement. With ethnic and social discrimination, which may be faced by up to 189,000 regular female migrants in our territory, it is a barrier that is very difficult to surmount.

New manual coming out on Work Safety New manual coming out on Work Safety 30/04/14

SIMI and their partners OPU and MKC are currently issuing a manual named SAFE WORK, which is primarily designed for foreigners, but can serve many other people - employees of non-profit organizations, trade unions, etc.

The manual provides questions to answers that pertain to everyday foreigners in our country, especially in regards to work. Inside you will find instructions on how to deal with different situations and problems at work, where to start, who to contact, what to avoid.
